Reasons for Spain visa refusal 2026

Here is a detailed explanation of the refusal notification letter issued by the Spanish consulate to visa applicants when a request is rejected. The consulate always relies on one or more of the following 17 reasons, taken word-for-word from the official unified Schengen form.
Reasons for Spain visa refusal
Reason 1
Se ha presentado un documento de viaje falso o falsificado
The passport is forged, expired, or contains errors.
Reason 2
No ha justificado el propósito y las condiciones de la estancia prevista
The purpose of the trip and/or the conditions of the intended stay are not justified (e.g. no work leave authorization, or an invalid hotel booking).
Reason 3
No ha aportado pruebas de disponer de medios de subsistencia suficientes...
No proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the entire intended stay (in plain terms: a weak bank account).
Reason 4
No ha aportado pruebas de que está en condiciones de adquirir legalmente medios de subsistencia suficientes...
No proof of being able to legally obtain sufficient means for the intended stay (in plain terms: an insufficient monthly salary).
Reason 5
Ha permanecido ya noventa días del período de 180 días en curso...
Already stayed 90 days within the current 180-day period in the Schengen area. A Schengen visa requires not staying more than 90 days in any 180-day period within member states, even if the visa itself is valid for 3 or 4 years. Anyone who breaches this will not be granted a new visa until six months have passed.
Reason 6
Ha sido introducida una descripción en el Sistema de Información de Schengen (SIS)...
The applicant is on the list of persons banned from entering the Schengen area.
Reason 7
Uno o varios Estados miembros consideran que supone usted una amenaza para el orden público o la seguridad nacional
One or more member states consider the applicant a threat to public order or national security (mainly applies to people with a criminal record, contagious diseases, or a violent profile).
Reason 8
...una amenaza para la salud pública...
One or more member states consider the applicant a threat to public health (applies to carriers of contagious diseases).
Reason 9
...una amenaza para sus relaciones internacionales
One or more member states consider the applicant a threat to their international relations.
Reason 10

The information provided to justify the purpose of the trip and the conditions of the stay is considered unreliable (e.g. an unconfirmed hotel booking, or a sponsor without a suitable job or sufficient guarantees).
Reason 11
Existen dudas razonables acerca de la fiabilidad de las declaraciones efectuadas...
There are reasonable doubts about the truthfulness of the statements made regarding the purpose of the trip and the conditions of the stay.
Reason 12
Existen dudas razonables acerca de la fiabilidad o la autenticidad de los documentos justificativos...
There are reasonable doubts about the reliability or authenticity of the supporting documents, or the truthfulness of their content.
Reason 13
Hay dudas razonables en cuanto a su intención de abandonar el territorio...
There are reasonable doubts about the applicant's intention to leave the territory of the member states before the visa expires. In this case it is often hard to pinpoint the exact reason, since the doubt concerns the file as a whole.
Reason 14
No han aportado pruebas suficientes de que no pudo solicitar un visado con antelación...
Insufficient proof was provided that the applicant could not have applied for the visa in advance (a rare case, mostly affecting foreigners already resident in the country, or certain transit visas).
Reason 15
No se ha justificado el propósito y las condiciones del tránsito aeroportuario previsto
The purpose and conditions of the intended airport transit are not justified.
Reason 16
No ha aportado la prueba de estar en posesión de un seguro médico de viaje adecuado y válido
No proof of valid, adequate travel insurance (valid insurance must cover at least €30,000).
Reason 17
El titular del visado solicitó la retirada del visado
The applicant themselves requested the withdrawal of their visa application.

What can you do if your Spain visa is refused?
If the Spanish consulate refuses to grant your visa for one of the reasons above, you have two options, to be used in order:
1. File an appeal against the refusal decision
The purpose of this appeal is for the very same consulate where you applied to review the file again, within a maximum period of one month from receiving the refusal notice.
This appeal is optional, and can be used if you believe you deserve the requested visa. You should also know that in the case of a refusal for a married couple, or a couple and their children, a separate appeal must be filed against each individual refusal decision; joint appeals for the whole family are not accepted.
2. Contentious-administrative appeal
If the consulate's response to the appeal is also negative, your last option is to file a contentious-administrative appeal before the National Court (Audiencia Nacional) in Madrid.
